COLUMBUS, Ohio - A central Ohio man being held in Dubai on corruption charges refused to eat until someone agreed to hear his case, 10TV’s Jason Frazer reported on Thursday.

Ohio State University graduate Zach Shahin was accused of embezzling $100,000 from Deyaar, a real estate firm based in Dubai.

"They accused him of having undue advantage with the chairman of the board," friend, Eric Akers said.

Akers said that his friend has been held in a Dubai prison for four years without a chance of parole. Akers told 10tv's Jason Frazer that Shahin has been tortured and interrogated.

"Our government has been reluctant to do anything to make any waves," Akers said.

Shahin wanted to get the United States government's attention, so he began a hunger strike in May.

The State Department was working with Dubai officials to resolve this crisis.

"There are several outstanding cases against him," State Department official Mark Toner said. "We want to see them consolidated so that he can defend himself more effectively,"

United States officials were pressing for Shahin to be released on bail, but Dubai officials refused.
